Experience the tremendous diversity of Canada's West with this exciting vacation featuring the Canadian Rocky Mountains, a guided ranch experience, iconic hotels and a magnificent coastal lodge, and of course two days of spectacular scenery and service onboard the Rocky Mountaineer.
Arrive in Calgary and spend the rest of the day sightseeing independently in the “Stampede City”. Overnight in Calgary.
Following breakfast at the Calgary Tower, visit The
Canadian Wilds Exhibit at the Calgary Zoo where your tour guide
will lead you on a walk through this immersion habitat featuring animals
from the Aspen Woodlands to the Rocky Mountains. Next, savour the delicious
taste and aroma of a hearty lunch at Heritage Park, a frontier
town where the people are as real as their town. From Heritage Park you
are transferred across Alberta’s rolling countryside to your guest
ranch where you will spend the next three nights enjoying the very best
of western hospitality. After a welcoming dinner enjoy a tranquil evening
savouring the sounds of nature in the shadow of the majestic Rockies. Overnight
at guest ranch.
Enjoy
a hearty breakfast before you head off to attend the rodeo and/or powwow.
For those who are not familiar with the Native American culture, powwows
are celebrations, social gatherings and friendly competitions of traditional
dancing, drumming, singing, ceremonies and feasting, and the bringing of
many nations of people together. At the rodeo you will experience the exhilaration
and excitement of bucking broncos, bull riders, steer wrestlers, calf ropers,
and barrel racers. At the conclusion of the rodeo and/or powwow, head back
to your ranch for dinner and another restful night in the foothills. Overnight
at guest ranch.
Today
you will experience the incomparable beauty of the rugged and majestic Rocky
Mountains. Your first stop is the Columbia Icefields, where
accumulation of snow feeds eight major glaciers atop the Continental Divide.
Take a tour of the icy slopes in a specially designed Ice Explorer that
goes to the middle of the glacier on a five-kilometre round trip journey.
After lunch at the Icefields, take a short trip to beautiful Lake
Louise. With its blue-green water set against the stark backdrop
of Victoria Glacier, Lake Louise is probably the most photographed scene
in the Canadian Rockies.
And, you’re not done yet. Your last stop, before heading home for the day, is the town of Banff. Here you can take an eight minute ride in a glass enclosed gondola to the 2288 m (7500 ft) summit of Sulphur Mountain, where three levels of outdoor observation decks offer a panoramic 360 degree view of Banff and the surrounding area. Also, you can tour the many fine museums and natural history centres, in addition to sampling the extensive and unique shopping opportunities.
Then it’s back to the guest ranch. Where, after a leisurely dinner, you can settle into your comfortable accommodations, and enjoy a good night’s rest in preparation for another full day tomorrow.
This
morning enjoy a trail ride and savour the majestic scenery on the beautiful
trails as you watch for birds and wildlife. After a hearty lunch, your journey
is a drive through Kananaskis Country. This is an unspoiled
paradise of towering mountains, pristine lakes, evergreen valleys, and glacial
streams. The name Kananaskis is rich with history. Captain John Palliser,
an early explorer of the valley, identified the area by taking the name
of a local Indian. Palliser wrote that he had heard of an Indian named Kananaskis,
"giving on account of a most wonderful recovery from the blow of an
axe to the head - which stunned, but failed to kill him."
At the end of the day you arrive back in Calgary, where we'll be happy to deliver you to your overnight accommodation.
Travel
onboard the Rocky Mountaineer from Calgary to Kamloops in the heart of British
Columbia’s interior. Your journey offers you a spectacular range of
scenery as you travel between the high peaks of the Canadian Rockies, over
mountain passes and through remarkable tunnels, along rocky lakeshores and
across the ranchlands of the interior. Today’s highlights include
the Continental Divide, the Spiral Tunnels, the Kicking Horse Canyon, Rogers
Pass, Craigellachie where the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway
was driven, and of course the glaciers and snow-capped peaks of the Canadian
Rockies. Overnight in Kamloops.
Your
journey continues west towards the Pacific Ocean and the coastal city of
Vancouver. On today’s journey you will again see dramatic changes
in scenery, from the desert-like environment of the interior, through the
winding river canyons and pristine forests, to the Coast and Cascade Mountains
and the lush green fields of the Fraser River Valley. Highlights include
the steep slopes and rock sheds along the Thompson River and the rushing
waters of Hell’s Gate in the Fraser Canyon. Your rail journey ends
on arrival in Vancouver this evening. Overnight in Vancouver.
Transfer
via taxi this morning to the South Terminal at Vancouver airport, where
you will board your 30-minute floatplane flight destined for West Coast
Wilderness Lodge. Tucked amidst the majestic cedar and fir trees of the
Canadian Pacific Coast, West Coast Wilderness Lodge offers a magnificent
getaway overlooking some of the most picturesque scenery in all of British
Columbia. Equipment rentals and instruction fees for rock climbing, canoeing,
mountain biking, hiking and a challenging ropes course are available during
your stay. Alternatively you may simply relax and enjoy the views from the
lodge, the outdoor jacuzzi and beachfront sauna. Overnight at West Coast
Wilderness Lodge.
Note: Total luggage weight per person is not to exceed
30 pounds.
Enjoy
the scenery on a two-hour guided ocean kayak trip from the lodge as your
guide leads you along the shoreline and across the inlet, letting the ocean
currents do much of your paddling for you. Your trip will begin with a land-based
training session and while no previous kayaking experience is necessary,
a moderate level of fitness is advised. All basic kayaking equipment is
provided, and you need only bring a rain jacket, long-sleeved shirt and
sun protection. Overnight at West Coast Wilderness Lodge.
Today
is at your leisure to explore the stunning surroundings of West Coast Wilderness
Lodge. Overnight at West Coast Wilderness Lodge.
Following check-out from West Coast Wilderness Lodge this morning, board your return flight to Vancouver, where a taxi will transfer you to your overnight accommodation. Overnight in Vancouver.
Your vacation ends with check-out from your Vancouver accommodation.
